Satellite Viewer Instructions

  The weather satellite viewer lets you view large animations of weather systems over an extended period time.

Player Controls

1) Select satellite and area of interest

At this time International Weather Archive has imagery from U.S. NOAA GOES East, NOAA GOES West, EUMETSAT Meteosat-7, EUMETSAT Meteosat-9 and JMA MTSAT-1R geostationary weather satellites.  This provide global coverage. Select the desired satellite.

For most satellites you can select from multiple areas including Full Disk.  Select the region of interest.

2) Set your start time and end times

Select the start and end dates and times of the images you would like view.

Following international weather standards, times are in UTC.  If you are not familiar with UTC time, see Wikipedia's article:

Note, that if you have a slow Internet connection, or an older computer, you may have to use a smaller range of dates to get good performance from the satellite viewer.

3) Press Update button

Any time satellite, area, dates or times are changed, you must press one of the play buttons (Play forward,Play reverse, Play forward, then reverse)  to accept your new satellite settings and times. 

Note, that if you start select a large number of images (more than 100), it may take some time before your browser has images downloaded and its display is updated.

The player controls allow you to play the series of images in a loop. When the viewer is first opened, the earliest image is displayed.

To begin the loop, press the "Play" button. You can also play the images backwards in time, and "sweep" backwards and forwards through the images, as well as control the speed at which you view the images.

Pause Pause image play
Play reverse Play images backwards in time
Play forward, then reverse Sweep play of images forward in time, and then backwards in time, and then forward, etc..
Slower Decrease play speed
Faster Increase play speed

Scrollbar

The scrollbar serves 2 functions:

1) Displaying current image location

The left side of the scrollbar indicates that the earleir images are now being viewed, while the right side indicates that the later images are being viewed.

2) Manually moving image location 

To move the scrollbar manually click on a the portion of the scrollbar to the left or right of the handle. This will move the the previous or next image.

You can also click on the handle, leave the mouse button pressed down and drag it left or right. This gives you very powerful control of which image is being viewed.
